East Maui
The Hana Highway 36 heads east from Kahului through the coastal town of Pa`ia. The highway has been rated one of the most scenic highways in America by publications over the years. The drive along the rugged coast through the lush rain forest is slow, but it’s certainly worthwhile.
The distance from Kahului to Hana is only 53 miles, but allow two-three hours to give yourself time to enjoy the sights. There are 56 bridges to cross and too many winding turns to count on this road. The best thing to do would be to allow a full day to enjoy a picnic and attractions in the Hana area.
Better yet, plan an overnight at the beautiful Travaasa Hotel and you’ll want to stay much longer.
Plan to stop at such places as the Waikamoi Ridge Trail Nature Walk, Kaumahina State Wayside Park, Wailua Valley Lookout over the taro fields, the village of Keanae, Hana Town and Hana Bay, the famous Hasegawa General Store, Wai`anapanapa State Park, Oheo Gulch and its Seven Pools, and Charles Lindbergh’s Grave at Palapala Ho`omau Church at Kipahulu. This is not a road for those who get road sick.
